NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE is considered an exceptional phenomenon in art. With her "shooting pictures", she was the only woman to join the Nouveau Réalisme art movement in 1961 and co-founded the new Happening art movement. She later became an entrepreneur who, through the sale of perfumes, "Nana balloons" and other merchandise, succeeded in realizing her lifelong dream in the form of a monumental sculpture garden, the Tarot Garden, and making it accessible to the public. However, her multifaceted oeuvre not only questions female role models and patriarchal structures, the artist's political spectrum goes far beyond this. She campaigned for the opening up of art, which she promoted through participatory works and sculptures in public spaces, and dealt with current political events such as the Kennedy administration, nuclear fear and Black Power.
