ARTIST'S GAME

CADAVRE EXQUIS

On the occasion of the exhibition FANTASTIC WOMEN. This fantastical being is made up of graphics and illustrations cut out of newspapers. It was created as part of a game the Surrealist artists enjoyed playing called “Cadavre exquis” (English: the delicious corpse). To play, several people create a picture together: The paper is folded in such a way that participants carry on creating it without knowing what the person who just added something to the image actually did.

THE GAME WAS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE SURREALIST’S EVERYDAY LIFE

Similar to the way they toyed with images, the artists also liked to play with words: Several people would construct a sentence together without players knowing the respective previous contributions. The sentence that lends the game its name, and which was created in said manner, reads: The delicious cadaver will drink new wine.

HOW TO PLAY

The image gallery provides a step-by-step description of how to create your own fantasy creature. Every player creates one body part: Player 1 creates the head, Player 2 the upper body, Player 3 the lower body, and Player 4 the legs and feet. After each step, the piece of paper is folded underneath the drawing. Only a small section may remain visible, showing the next player where to continue the drawing. Don’t let the other players see what you’re drawing, and only unfold the fantasy creature at the end!

TIPS

  • The fantasy creature can also be made in three, five or more steps
  • Color the fantasy creature in using watercolors or use cut-outs from old magazines
  • Use a piece of paper to cover the drawing if you would rather not fold your artwork
