REVISITING DOUBLE FEATURE: FOCUS ON QUEER ART

Our DOUBLE FEATURE series presents a variety of artists who deal with queerness in their work. We have selected some of the best video interviews for you.

By SCHIRN MAGAZIN
James Gregory Atkinson

We need alternative archives! The lack of visibility of the history of Black people motivates Atkinson to inscribe himself in the archives and make omitted narratives visible. In the interview with DOUBLE FEATURE curator Katharina Dohm, artist James Gregory Atkinson gives an insight into his work “The Day I Stop Kissing My Father” and his interest in film.

Philipp Gufler

During her time on the german casting show "Deutschland sucht den Superstar," Lana Kaiser, then still known as Daniel Küblböck, was stigmatized by the media as a freak. After her disappearance in 2018, Gufler rewrites this narrative in a media- and socio-critical way - and draws a personal portrait of Kaiser as a misjudged pioneer of the trans movement. In the interview with DOUBLE FEATURE curator Anna Huber, artist Philipp Gufler gives an insight into his work "Lana Kaiser" and his interest in film.

Flo Maak

What happened in New Orleans during the Mardi Gras celebration in February 1955? Was there a riot against the police, a full 14 years before the Stonewall riots in New York City, which have so far been seen as a turning point in the fight for equal rights for the LGBT movement? For his video work "Hang On, Hang Tight", artist Flo Maak goes in search of clues together with Lasse Lau. In the interview with DOUBLE FEATURE curator Julia Schaake, film artist Flo Maak gives an insight into his work "Hang On, Hang Tight" and his interest in film.

Peng Zuqiang

What if Roland Barthes had been a local tourist? In his video artwork “Sight Leak” (2022), Chinese artist Peng Zuqiang re-imagines the French author’s travel notes from the perspective of a domestic traveler. In the interview with DOUBLE FEATURE curator Marie Oucherif, visual artist Peng Zuqiang gives an insight into his work "Sight Leak" and his interest in film.
