Since their first meeting as sculpting students at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London more than 50 years ago, Gilbert & George have been challenging (artistic) conventions. They form a perfect unity that does not distinguish between art and life. They embody their art as a so-called Living Sculpture and are themselves the subject and object of their large-format pictorial worlds, which they refer to throughout as sculptures – thus to this day they remain true not only to themselves but also to sculpture in their own unique way.
