In his mostly large-scale video installations, Johannes Büttner (*1985) explores speculative and scientifically based socio-economic themes in the present, past and future. To sketch out future scenarios, he makes use of various hacking strategies, DIY formats and the cyber punk genre. His work often involves people who operate outside the art world. The resulting narratives oscillate between reality and fiction. Büttner has been presented in numerous solo exhibitions, including most recently at the Mauer, Cologne (2022); the Literaturhaus Berlin (2022) and Tale of a tub, Rotterdam (2020). His works have been shown in group exhibitions at Los Angeles art space, Günsterode; KW Berlin; bpa space, Cologne; and W139, Amsterdam (all 2023). His film “Platform” was nominated for the German Short Film Award in 2022. His first feature film, a co-production as part of the ZDF program “Das kleine Fernsehspiel”, is currently in post-production.
