Experience art, shape discourses – the diverse program of the SCHIRN
The SCHIRN captivates with a diverse program ranging from major overview exhibitions to focused thematic shows and solo exhibitions. Art from modern to contemporary periods is connected with socially relevant questions and illuminated from new perspectives. Accompanying events, interdisciplinary formats, and digital offerings invite active engagement with art and participation in current discourses.
As one of Europe’s leading art institutions, the SCHIRN has been a cornerstone of Frankfurt’s cultural life for nearly 40 years. It showcases artistic works from the 19th century to the present day, annually attracting both local and international audiences. To date, over 280 exhibitions have been presented across approximately 2,000 m², drawing more than 10 million visitors.
The SCHIRN presents major overview exhibitions, focused thematic shows, as well as solo exhibitions and retrospectives—on the radical art of international avant-gardes, pioneering artists, current phenomena, and societal debates. A central concern of the SCHIRN is the expansion and critical re-examination of art history: Which prominent figures should be reconsidered today, and which positions are missing—especially with regard to diversity and the recognition of female artists. Social and cultural-historical topics such as democratic engagement, critical inquiry into the present, ecology and sustainability, as well as digital transformation, are recurring themes in the interdisciplinary program. Another focus is on film and video art. In the publicly accessible Rotunda, the SCHIRN presents site-specific installations of contemporary positions.
With a variety of educational offerings and events, the SCHIRN sets standards in the art world—both on-site and digitally. Its comprehensive and innovative educational and mediation program for all age groups brings people together in interdisciplinary formats, talks, and events, enables contemporary access to art, invites active participation in current discourses, connects art with people’s everyday lives, and incorporates diverse perspectives.
