This summer with our PEACE exhibition, the SCHIRN sets out to explore how peace actually works, a question that is as compelling as ever today. Quite apart from this, we feel it is high time for a new ‘PEACE’ logo, a logo for today that reflects our current notion of peace
THE PEACE PROJECT 1 JULY – 24 SEPTEMBER 2017
The representation of peace is often limited to the known symbols: doves, rainbow colors, guns festooned with flowers. In the discursive group exhibition, the SCHIRN heads in a different direction and asks: How does peace actually work? Starting from the fact that peace becomes clear in interaction and communication between people and all the actors existing in the eco-sphere, the show focuses on aspects that have always secured and enabled human (co-)existence, such as water, animals, plants, language or the gift economy.
The exhibition presents works of international artists such as Jan de Cock, Minerva Cuevas, Ed Fornieles, Michel Houellebecq, Surasi Kusolwong, Isabel Lewis, Lee Mingwei, Katja Novitskova, Heather Phillipson, Agnieszka Polska, Timur Si-Qin and Ulay, to offer a contemporary perspective on the theme. A key role will be played here by the current reinterpretation of the humanist image of the world and its impact on human/nature interaction. The PEACE exhibition will be accompanied by countless live events, such as poetry performances, concerts, lectures and cookery sessions in which visitors can take part. The program will be developed together with the artists involved.
